Run a Diagnostic Scan on your Chromebook – Complete Scan

I will share a method about how you can run a diagnostic scan on your Chromebook. You can fix all problem with your Chromebook by running a successful scan. You can fix Battery, CPU, Memory and another type of issue using a diagnostic scan.

Chromebook is a hardware device and just like any other hardware device, it is susceptible to damage. With any portable device, there are several situations where the device might not be working as it used to do. There might be an issue that the battery is not lasting as long as it used to do or there is improper memory consumptions.

For situations like these, the Chrome OS includes an application known as the “Diagnostic Tool“. This tool focuses on diagnosing any problems that may be coming inside the Chromebook that are causing it to act different or unusual. In the further sections, we would look at how to access the Diagnostic application and later we will take a look at how you can run a diagnostic scan on your Chromebook.

How to Access the Diagnostic application on your Chromebook?

The Diagnostic application was made available in the April 2020 Chrome OS version 90. This was introduced as an user interface that the users can use to run the diagnostic tests. You can access the Diagnostic application through two different methods. Let us take a look at those methods. Once, you are able to access the application then you can easily run diagnostic tests on it.

In the first method, click on the launcher icon in the bottom left of the screen. Now, type “Diagnostics” in the search bar. After typing, you would see the Diagnostic application pop up in the search result. The icon looks like a circle with graph points. Select the application and click on it to open it.

The second method that we would be discussing, would be involving the Settings of the Chrome OS. To begin, click on the “Time Display” present in the bottom right of the screen. This will open the “Quick Settings Panel” where you would find the Settings icon. Click on the Settings icon that looks like gears to open the Chrome OS Settings. Locate the option of “About Chrome OS” from the list of options and click on it. Finally, click on the “Diagnostic” option to open the Diagnostic application.

Now, since we now have access to the Diagnostic application. Let us take a look at the different sections involved to run a diagnostic scan on your Chromebook.

How to Run a Diagnostic Scan on your Chromebook?

The Diagnostic Application provides you with three different categories or sections in which you can run your scans. The sections are “Battery“, “CPU” and lastly “Memory“. In the different sections that are provided in the application, there is relevant information that is provided to the user about each of the category. You can run different diagnostic scans on your Chromebook. Let us have a look at them one by one.

How to Run a Diagnostic Scan on your Chromebook for Battery?

In the Battery section there are general information that is given such as “Battery Health“, “Cycle Count” and “Current“. These are the metrics that is used to measure Battery endurance over time.

Battery Health tells the user about how good the battery is at retaining charge. If this number is decreasing or is on the lower end, then you definitely need to change your battery.

Cycle Count is a general count of the number of times your Chromebook battery has been fully charged that is from 0 % to 100%.

Current tells whether the battery is being charged or discharged.

Now, there are actually two diagnostic tests that can be performed in the Battery section. The “Run Charge Test“, when your battery is plugged in to charge and the “Run Discharge Test” when your Chromebook is not charging. You can run any of the test depending on whether your Chromebook is being charged or not at that moment. On running the test, you will be shown the results of the test.

How to Run a Diagnostic Scan on your Chromebook for CPU?

The CPU section focuses on the processor of your device and its performance. There is general information about the processor and a real-time processing usage graph. The CPU section also has different metrics that give the user real-time data about the processors. These metrics are “Current Usage“, “Temperature” and “Current Speed“.

The “Current Usage” metric tells about the amount of processing that is being utilized in percentage. The “Temperature” metric gives the processors temperature in degree Celsius. And finally, the “Current Speed” is the speed of the processors in GHz.

Now, to run the CPU diagnostic test, click on the “Run CPU Test” button. This will run some diagnostic test and moreover give you some extra details about the tests that ran. You will see “SUCCESS” if the CPU is working perfectly fine.

How to Run a Diagnostic Scan on your Chromebook for Memory?

In this section, you will see a bar that shows the amount of memory that is being used and the amount which is not being used. To run the diagnostic scan, click on the button of “Run Memory Test“. You will see the result of the tests after some time as the Memory Diagnostic Test consumes the time of at least 10 minutes. This was the simple method through which you can quickly run a diagnostic scan on your Chromebook and check the health of the memory.
