Bug-type Pokémon also have a weakness to Flying-type attacks. This makes sense as many Bug-type Pokémon are land-based and cannot repel aerial attacks. Flying-type Pokémon, with their speed and air superiority, can defeat Bug types with their powerful Flying moves.
Bug types also have a weakness to Rock types. In that they are light and often fragile, Bug types are no match for the power of Rock-type attacks. A well-delivered Rock-type move may put a large dent in a Bug-type Pokémon.
While there are many bug-type vulnerabilities, what we see is which methods work best to defeat them in battle. Let’s take a look at the top strategies for bug type weaknesses.
Since Bug-type Pokémon are weak to, one of the best ways to go against them is with Fire-type Pokémon or moves. Charizard, Arcanine, and Blaziken, which are Fire-type, have high special attack stats and do great damage with Fire-type moves like Flamethrower or Fire Blast. Also, these moves do very well against Bug types and, at times, may put them out in one hit.
Flying-type Pokémon also do very well against Bug types in the game, which we see in part because of their resistance to Bug moves and also because of Bug’s weakness to Flying attacks. We have Pidgeot, Staraptor, and Honchkrow, which put out powerful Flying-type moves like Aerial Ace and Brave Bird, which in turn do in the Bug types. Also, most of the Flying types tend to have high speed, which in turn gives them the advantage of going first, and in many cases, the Bug type doesn’t get a chance to attack at all.
Rock-type Pokémon and their moves are also a great way to defeat Bug types. Bugs are weak to Rock-type moves, which is a result of their soft bodies, and Rock-type moves usually do heavy damage. Pokémon such as Tyranitar, Golem, and Rhyperior may learn powerful Rock-type moves like Stone Edge or Rock Slide, which put an end to Bug types in the battle.
While it is easy to see which types to attack with in the case of Bug types, what can’t be ignored is which ones you put up against them. Many Bug-type Pokémon use status moves like Toxic and Leech Life to outlast their foe. To that end, we may want to look at options for which Pokémon have strong defense stats or are able to repel status conditions. Steelix (a Steel Ground type) or Shuckle (Bug Rock type), for example, do well in standing up to Bug types because of their tough defenses. Also, you can use these to, in turn, outlast the Bug type with your own attacks.
Interestingly, in some cases, certain Bug-type Pokémon have moves that play into their own type’s weaknesses. For example, the Bug Buzz and X-Scissor which are very powerful Bug-type moves that do great damage to opposing types. Also, it is important to note that not all Bug types will have moves that take care of their enemies’ weaknesses, so it is a good idea to check out your Pokémon’s move set before going into battle.
Bug-type Pokémon may appear small, but their weak points to Fire, Flying, and Rock types are what you should know. In battle, do well to use Fire-type, Flying-type, or Rock-type Pokémon to turn the tide in your favor. With the right strategy and knowledge of Bug type weaknesses, you will be well-prepared to overcome these often-overlooked opponents and secure the win.
