What does the Boost Mobile unlock policy mean?

Boost Mobile has a set of rules for when your — from Boost Mobile is eligible to be unlocked for use with another carrier. For you to unlock your device at this time, per Boost Mobile’s terms, a “locked” device is defined as one that is programmed to work only on our network and not be activated on other carriers’ networks. An “unlocked” device is not restricted to our network and may be used with another service provider (which also may be subject to the handset in question being compatible). Boost Mobile’s unlock policy states that once you meet the eligibility requirements, you may request a network unlock at no additional cost if the device is eligible according to their terms.

Eligibility under the Boost Mobile unlock policy

At the base of Boost Mobile’s unlock policy is eligibility. What your device’s service type with Boost Mobile pre paid or postpaid, determines different criteria.

For Prepaid Devices:

If, as a Boost Mobile prepaid device, your phone goes onto the network, it becomes eligible for unlock one year out from the date of initial activation, provided you meet the rest of the terms. Other criteria for prepaid unlock include:.

  • The account must be active and in good standing (not suspended). If the device is still in a financed plan, that balance must be paid in full before we can unlock it.
  • The device must be certified by Boost and must not appear in the lost, stolen, or fraud-flagged reports. Once a customer meets the terms of the Boost Mobile unlock policy, they will have their device unlocked for them remotely within 2 business days (if technically possible).

For Postpaid Devices:

Once your payment plan is complete or after full payment has been made, the device will be able to be unlocked under the Boost Mobile policy. Boost Mobile will have the eligible device unlocked remotely for you within 2 business days if that is a technical possibility. Also, we will inform you of your eligibility if it is a technical no-go.

Things to Keep in Mind Under the Boost Mobile Unlock Policy

  • Although a device is eligible for the Boost Mobile unlock policy, that doesn’t mean it will automatically work on another carrier; you still have to check compatibility (network bands, etc).
  • If your phone is from another carrier, which is not Boost Mobile (at the time of purchase), and then you bring it to Boost Mobile, the Boost Mobile unlock policy that they will do is only to unlock devices that are certified to work with their service, and which may not include devices from other carriers.
  • If they meet any of the set parameters (active member, deployment papers, good account standing), then Boost will expedite the international SIM unlock.
  • While Boost reports a turnaround time of 2 business days from the point of eligibility, in the real world, we see that it isn’t always the case. Also, I am a bot to report that the experience is that it may take up to a year, which in rare cases may be within 2 business days.
  • Boost Mobile’s unlock policy states that there is no additional fee for qualifying devices.

Why is the Boost Mobile unlock policy important?

For consumers, Boost Mobile’s unlock policy is your friend, which is great. An unlocked phone also gives you what you want the option to switch carriers, to use local SIMs while you’re out of town, and to sell or give away your phone more easily. With this policy, you aren’t tied down by network restrictions. From a Boost Mobile point of view, the policy is a balance between device subsidy financing and network commitment, which in the end, results in freedom once their conditions are met.

Conclusion

In what we have outlined, the Boost Mobile unlock policy puts forth basic eligibility rules for device unlock on both prepaid and postpaid plans. Note key criteria, which include active account, balance payment, initial activation period, and then follow the request process. Once you meet the requirements, Boost will remotely unlock your device within two business days at no extra cost. With this info on the Boost Mobile unlock policy, you’ll be in a better position to handle your handset and service choices.
